Look a little closer and there’s something familiar about the singer. These days, she has long, black hair that matches her nails and more tattoos than she used to, but eagle-eyed viewers of the X Factor would still recognise Katie Waissel. With her new band ‘Red Velvet’, Katie and her crew came down for a week of recording at Stakeout. For Waissel, Red Velvet is less a reinvention than a return to her roots. Influenced by the likes of No Doubt and Blondie, the sound has a definite edginess to it and Katie installs a mass of energy to the vocals. Red Velvet are signed to Twilight Zone Management and have been writing with the likes of Alice Cooper guitarist Tommy Henriksen, Jerry Meehan (Robbie Williams and Roxy Music) and Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers).
